Position: Buyer 1 (MRO/Tooling)
Location/Department: Rome, New York / Purchasing

The Position

This position is a member of the Purchasing Department. The Buyer 1 (MRO/Tooling) will report directly to the Materials Manager.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for the day-to-day release of Purchase Orders to support manufacturing (machine stock & tooling) and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO).
  • Responsible for the Fastenal in-plant store activities
  • Primary interface between manufacturing plant operations and Materials Manager
  • Implement Negotiated PO Terms & Conditions (Quality, Delivery, Price, Logistics, and Value add services, etc.)
  • Monitor order status and past due reports; Expedite & de-expedite orders
  • Initiate/Conduct Supplier interface & meetings
  • Champion special needs/projects as directed by Materials Manager
  • Negotiate lead-time and min/multi requirements; establish appropriate safety stock levels
  • Monitor supplier quality and delivery performance and initiate corrective action
  • Develop and maintain assigned ISO procedures and related work instructions

Job Requirements               

Education

  • Buyer: 1-3 years purchasing, materials, or scheduling experience preferred
  • High School or equivalent required; Assoc. Degree Preferred in related field of study

Skills & Relevant Work Experience 

  • Good written & verbal communication skills required
  • Understanding of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and order replenishment techniques required
  • Self-starter with excellent organizational skills required
  • Strong computer skills (Information Systems; Microsoft Office, (XA) Mapics or equivalent
  • Experience working with Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI)
  • Experience working in a Machine Shop environment
  • Experience with CNC/Machine tooling
  • Experience with reading drawings (blue prints)
  • Experience with buying Raw Materials such as Aluminum, A6, D2, etc.
  • Experience with buying Maintenance, Repair, and Operation supplies (MRO)
  • Experience working with outside service providers such as heat treating and plating operations
  • Experience with Lean/6s & 6 Sigma training/certification a plus
  • Fluency in English
  • Responsible for providing effective communications channels with all BMS manufacturing disciplines including Production Control, Accounting, Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering
  • High energy level with superior concentration, analytical and communication skills
